With three generations of family farming history, a lifetime’s experience in entrepreneurial small farming, and growing international acclaim to back him up, Joel demonstrates conclusively that the dream of a profitable, healthy, sustainable, beyond-organic small farm enterprise is quite achievable!

farmers market displayHis Polyface Farm, for example, has achieved both local and global fame, supplying a customer base of more than 3,000 families, 10 retail outlets, and 50 restaurants, being profiled in Smithsonian Magazine, National Geographic, and Gourmet (among other media coverage), and being featured in the movie Food, Inc. and the New York Times best-seller The Omnivore’s Dilemma.

And for years now Joel has been taking his act on the road, inspiring corporate executives and home-business owners, churches and civic groups, stay-at-home parents and students with his creative, proven ideas for sustainable, successful agriculture businesses that don’t depend on owning acres of pasture.

And on March 20 and 21, Carrie Murray Nature Center is proud to host two days of live-streaming workshops by Joel Salatin through Verge Permaculture – a Calgary, Alberta-based education and demonstration center dedicated to sustainable food security through permaculture.

Wednesday, March 20
You Can Farm

No vague theorizing here –you’lvegetables at a standl get a full toolbox of practical how-to’s, ranging from urban farming and creative land acquisition to permaculture-based production principles – for example, mutually supportive plant and animal relationships (e.g., chickens and rabbits? Who knew?) and effective composting for sustainably fertile soil.

We’ll talk about farming like an entrepreneur, becoming your own middleman, and marketing to a diverse audience.

And finally, we’ll take a look at what happens once your farm is solidly on its feet: how to build a trained team of employees, and how to create a lasting, profitable legacy for your children and grandchildren.

Thursday, March 21
Pastured Poultry Profits

ChickensJoel shows us how to build a thriving poultry farm from – as you might say – scratch: how to build a portable shelter for your chosen bird(s), how to pick the breed you need, and how to create safe environments in the brood-box and outside.

We’ll talk about economics – profit and loss for chickens versus turkeys, egg-layers versus broilers, parts versus whole birds – and how to figure price margins. And you’ll learn how to keep your birds healthy, happy, well-fed and well-protected from the egg to the end.

Participate in the discussion in real-time…

Sure, some live-streaming workshops feature one camera focused on the speaker’s talking head. Not this one!

Verge has hired a full technical team including videographers, an audio guy/gal, a lead technical coordinator, and a chat moderator, plus equipment (cameras/lighting, computer streaming hardware, etc).

So you’ll see dynamic, changing camera views as Joel paces, faces off, and gesticulates… audience pans and closeup shots of audience reactions…and of course, full views of all his slides.

You’ll be able to send in your questions to Joel by chat or Twitter and hear him respond to them as time allows…and you’ll even be able to interact online with the on-site participants!

Most Important: Get to know your local allies and resources…

You may be saying, “Sure, it’s one thing to have great ideas for a family business – it’s another to have the connections to support them!” We’ve got that covered, too, with Carrie Murray’s glittering list of co-sponsors for this event. Just for starters, here are a few…

Made possible by  Vergeperma Culture

During the breakouts, you’ll hear about our co-sponsors’ latest advances and opportunities in urban agriculture, sustainability and food security, right here, right now in B-more. And you’ll get the opportunity to network and develop valuable resources to bring your dream business into reality.
